From December 1990 to September 2020, Gie Goris worked full-time in global affairs journalism, serving first as editor-in-chief of Wereldwijd (1990–2002) and subsequently as editor-in-chief of MO* (2003–July 2020).
His areas of expertise include culture and religion in the context of conflict and human development, interculturality and globalization, and – since 9/11 – Islamism. He specialized in Asia (spanning from Iran to Indonesia and from Central Asia to South Asia), with a strong focus in recent years on the region surrounding Afghanistan. Although now retired, he remains active as a freelance journalist.
